Standard Drink Calculator

mL
%

Calculate the number of standard drinks in a beverage based on volume, ABV, and country standard.

Formula

Ethanol (g) = volume (mL) × (ABV/100) × 0.789; Standard drinks = ethanol g ÷ g per drink
  • US standard: 14 g ethanol = 12 oz regular beer (5%), 5 oz wine (12%), 1.5 oz spirits (40%).
  • UK unit = 8 g; UK health guidelines: ≤14 units/week for men and women.
  • Ethanol density: 0.789 g/mL at 20°C.

355 mL beer at 5% ABV (US)

Inputs
  • Volume of Beverage: 355 mL
  • Alcohol by Volume (ABV): 5 %
  • Country Standard: us

Ethanol = 355 × 0.05 × 0.789 = 14.01 g ÷ 14 = 1.00 US standard drinks.
