Estimate how your BMI could raise a health or life insurance premium. Enter your weight, height, and base premium, and this calculator works out your BMI, an illustrative loading percentage, and the loaded premium.

  • Illustrative loading bands only. Actual underwriting varies by insurer.

Formula

BMI = weight ÷ height²; Loaded premium = base × (1 + loading%)
  • First your BMI is found as weight ÷ height², then a loading percentage is applied based on which BMI band you fall into.
  • Illustrative bands: BMI 27.5–29.9 adds ~10%, 30–34.9 adds ~25%, 35–39.9 adds ~50%, and 40+ adds ~100%.
  • Being underweight can also add a loading: BMI under 18.5 adds ~10% and under 16 adds ~25%.
  • The loaded premium is your base premium multiplied by (1 + loading%).
  • These are example bands only — each insurer sets its own underwriting rules, so your actual loading may differ.

85 kg, 170 cm, Rs 50,000 base

Inputs
  • Weight: 85 kg
  • Height: 170 cm
  • Base Annual Premium: 50000 Rs

BMI = 85 ÷ 1.70² ≈ 29.4, which falls in the 27.5–29.9 band for a ~10% loading, raising a Rs 50,000 premium to about Rs 55,000.

Frequently asked questions

What is premium loading?
It is an extra percentage added to your base insurance premium to reflect higher assessed risk — here, a BMI outside the healthy range.
How does BMI affect my premium?
A higher (or very low) BMI is linked to greater health risk, so insurers may add a loading. The further from the healthy range, the larger the typical loading.
Are these loading percentages exact?
No. They are illustrative bands. Each insurer uses its own underwriting tables and may also weigh other health factors.
Can I reduce a BMI-based loading?
Moving toward a healthy BMI may lower the loading at renewal or on a new policy, but the final decision rests with the insurer.
Does a low BMI also add a loading?
It can. Being significantly underweight is also treated as elevated risk, so very low BMI values may carry a loading too.
