Bread Spread Calculator

Work out how much spread (butter, jam, peanut butter, etc.) you need for a batch of bread or sandwiches, and how many jars to buy. Enter the number of slices, the spread per slice, and your jar size.

Formula

Total Spread = Slices × Spread per Slice; Jars = ⌈Total ÷ Jar Size⌉
  • Multiply the number of slices by the spread used per slice to get the total amount of spread needed.
  • Divide that total by the jar or tub size and round up to find how many containers to buy.
  • A typical thin layer of butter or jam is around 8–12 g per slice; adjust to taste.
  • For two-slice sandwiches, the slice count is halved to show how many sandwiches you can make.

20 slices, 10 g each, 250 g jar

Inputs
  • Number of Slices: 20 slices
  • Spread per Slice: 10 g
  • Jar / Tub Size: 250 g

20 × 10 = 200 g of spread needed, which fits in a single 250 g jar and covers 10 two-slice sandwiches.

Frequently asked questions

How much spread goes on a slice of bread?
A thin, even layer is usually about 8–12 g. Generous spreaders may use 15 g or more, while a light scrape might be 5 g.
How many jars should I buy?
Divide the total spread needed by your jar size and round up, since you can't buy a fraction of a jar.
Does this work for catering large batches?
Yes. Enter the total number of slices for an event and your bulk container size to estimate how many tubs you'll need.
Can I use it for any spread?
Yes — butter, margarine, jam, peanut butter, cream cheese, or hummus. Just set the grams per slice typical for that spread.
